Today we were in Hurumanu and we were learning about the Maori people. We learned how the Maori people got to Aotearoa. They sailed in boats that were called Waka and they came from Hawaiki.
They had to find some of their food because they only really ate food like Kumara, Taro and Kaimoana. The moa became extinct because the Maori also hunted them and also rats and dogs ate their moa eggs.
The people in tribes would fight for their food because they were all hungry and it didn't grow as well in the cold climate compared to where they had come from.
It is proven that Maori and Moriori descended from the same people. They found out by their language and their DNA.
I want to learn about the Treaty of Waitangi and the Europeans arrival because we didn't get to learn about the treaty.
